Backchecking from Hammer Line Gauge

This gauge allows backchecking to be regulated by measuring up from the hammer line as opposed to down from the strings. Instructions:

1. Blow distance and key dip must be regulated first
2. Move the action to any relatively flat surface
3. Subtract the desired backchecking distance from the blow distance to determine the backchecking height above the hammer line
4. Working section by section, replicate key dip by shimming the front rail or allowing it to overhang the edge of the work surface
   
5. Work through the section, iteratively play a key, observe the backchecking height by resting the gauge on the neighboring hammers, and adjust the backcheck as necessary
6. Tip: Before moving on to the next section, also regulate drop and repetition spring strength
7. Tip: You can use the gauge to reach in between the hammers to adjust the backcheck away from the keys.

This method is great primarily for at-the-piano regulations.

• Replicating key dip section by section is much easier than repeatedly pulling the action out to adjusting sample note backchecks and returning the action to testing the backchecking distance; it also makes drop and repetition spring strength adjustments more accurate
