Create custom key buttons in your shop without CNC machinery!
When you buy commercial key buttons, you have to live with whatever size, grain direction, and offset (between white and black keys) is available. Often, the results are amateurish at best and, in the worst case, at risk of failure.
Our key mortise templates work with a plunge router fitted with a 1/2" guide bushing to help you create accurate and precise mortises in key button blanks.
- Four template sizes create mortises for 0.129", 0.137", 0.146", and 0.162" pins.
- Create 1–5 key buttons at a time.
- Angle engravings in the template let you establish a proper angle between the mortise and wood grain.
- The templates also allow you to square the front and back ends of the blank to the mortises.
- With the squared front and back ends, you can trim the blanks to size and profile the ends using a table saw or router table.
The plunge router and 1/2" guide bushing are not included. The exact diameter of your guide bushing affects the size of the mortise. We offer a 1/8" bit separately.
